An interesting class session : Facebook

This past week in ComTech has been extremely interesting. We covered topics involving the many issues generated by the existence of Facebook. The class took a very eye-opening turn as we are exposed to many little facts that I was unaware of, blissfully ignorant. Suddenly Facebook wasn't just Facebook anymore. Facebook was alot of things.

Trust.
Ingenuity.
Business.
Communication.
Barrier breaker.
Opportunity.

Did you know that Facebook's founder is only 23 this year?

Omg.

-and that he turned down a 1Billion Dollar offer for his company?

whadahew.

Did you know that Facebook is so great it's roughly valued at 15Billion Dollars?

Omg.

Did you know that Facebook isn't really make much revenue despite it all?

Omg

Do you know what Facebook is doing with our personal information?

Omg

Yea. Neither do I. And apparently neither does the rest of the world.

Then this will get you thinking, how on earth does Facebook earn their winnings? Surely the answer is pretty obvious, no amount of denials can cover this up. If one were to read their Terms and Conditions as well as their Privacy Policy (I know more people who have eaten live earthworms than people that that do) it is plainly obvious that Facebook wants to give us the impression we have the freedom to control our information and details, yet simultaneously reserves every right to our information to hold as their own. Now why would they want do such a thing? Yet again you know, Facebook isn't the only platform with such a working plan.

How much do you care about this given situation?

Firstly I will admit that I am a Facebook user. Prior to this I have yet to set myself in any social network of a similiar kind. That means I've never had a Friendster nor a MySpace or anything of the likes. One of the reasons why I started Facebook-ing was that some primary friends I recently met up again after 7 long years were all doing it. Then, it felt like a good idea to have my own account to keep in contact with them, especially since most of them soon headed overseas to pursue their studies.

And that is one of the few main reasons as to why I continue to Facebook with passion. Ever since I had my own account, I have been able to keep track and keep in contact with many friends that I had once deemed lost or unable to connect with anymore. I can still update myself with people so far away from me now that communication on a regular basis is so difficult, at the same time letting them know how my life is heading so far. CIMP's student council is currently using the Facebook applications to further help coordinate meetings and announcements and such. The various applications on Facebook creates interesting social topics with friends.

Granted, Facebook isn't the most perfect social network out there. There are many hiccups and kinks along the way that frustrates me up to no end too. I dislike the applications request and how it eats up my notification box. Or the fact that users can only delete it one-by-one.

Other than that I don't think I have much to complain about Facebook. In my opinion, they can do whatever they want with whatever meager information they have about me. As long as I am sure that the information I release will not harm me in anyway, cannot be used in fraud or bank robberies, cannot be traced to my current exact location at any given time, cannot be used by sick serial stalkers to hunt me down..... then I am okay with whatever they want to use it for.
